Repair or Replace the Windshield?

by Jason Jackson on February 3, 2017

The sound of your windshield cracking or chipping is one of the worst sounds you can hear. You’re driving home from work one day, minding your own business, and then you hear it….CRACK, like a bullet! A rock from a truck in front of you hits your windshield. It’s a frustrating situation because even though it wasn’t your fault at all, you are responsible for getting it fixed. But with all the different types of cracks and specifications, how do you know whether you need a simple repair or a full replacement? Here are a few questions you should ask yourself if you have a damaged windshield:

Where is the chip or crack?

The location of the chip or crack on your windshield can determine whether or not you are eligible for a repair. If the chip is not on the edge of the windshield, not in the driver’s line of sight, and not in front of any important sensors or cameras, you might be able to qualify for a simple repair. However, if your chip or crack is in one of the above locations, your windshield should be replaced.

How large is the chip or crack?

Smaller chips and cracks are typically quick and relatively inexpensive to repair. You will know you need a repair rather than a replacement if the chip or crack is one inch or smaller. A good trick to use to see if you qualify for a repair is to place a quarter on the chip or crack. If it fits under the quarter you will likely only need a repair.

When should I get a repair or replacement?

It’s best to get your auto glass checked out as soon as possible. Even if your chip or crack is small, it can spread if you hit a pothole or drive on a gravel road. If you wait too long, that small crack that could’ve been repaired could grow into a much larger crack that requires a full auto glass replacement, which is likely to cost you more.

If your windshield is cracked, should you repair it or replace it? The answer depends on several factors, like the size, location, and number of chips or cracks. While a repair can be quick, easy, and inexpensive, a replacement can be more costly — so it’s crucial to visit a specialist such as Jackson Mobile Auto Glass immediately following the accident.
